Case Study: Carpentry and Decorating Services For 242 New Homes at Selbourne Rd, Alton

At SC4 Carpenters Ltd and our decorating division SC4 Decorators, we recognise the importance of quality, safety, collaborative working and timely construction. This is why many of our clients come back to us time and time again. A good example of this is the work we carried out for our customer Foreman Homes at their residential development site in Alton, Hampshire, in which we undertook both carpentry and decorating works.

About the customer and project

Foreman Homes, founded in 1997, is one of the pre-eminent housebuilding businesses in Hampshire and southern England, with a variety of exciting residential projects covering homes of all sizes and styles.

Having worked with Foreman Homes on a mixed new build project at Oakley near Basingstoke in 2019, in October 2020, we were invited to tender for the contract carpentry and internal and external decorating services on their site of 52 new homes at Selbourne Road, Alton, Hampshire.

The contract was a labour-only project covering both carpentry and decorating. Works included installing joists, roof, stairs, first fix and second fix carpentry, external doors, and final carpentry on each property, followed by decoration of the walls, ceilings, woodwork and external paintwork. We also provided contract crane lifts for the roof trusses.

In Summer 2022, we were asked to return to Selbourne Road to work on a further 190 homes for phase 2 of the project, making a total of 242 homes. This work is ongoing, with the project scheduled to complete by the end of 2025.

The challenge

From an operational perspective, the customer was keen to streamline the process of managing various subcontractors within the project. By tendering both carpentry and decorating to a single contractor, the customer aimed to simplify communication, gain greater transparency over costs, avoid delays, and reduce the overall risk profile of the project.

With a proven track record of delivering high standards of work and customer satisfaction in both commercial carpentry and decorating, SC4 fitted the bill perfectly. After a successful engagement with Foreman in phase 1 at Selbourne Road, we were delighted to be invited back to continue the project in phase 2.

From our perspective, October 2020 was ominous time to begin work on site, with the country moving from heavy restrictions back into full lockdown during the height of the Covid 19 Pandemic. Our challenge, therefore, was to balance the needs of the customer’s works schedule and budget with the need to implement strict social distancing and hygiene protocols within our work – something our team rose to with both determination and humour.

Outcomes and customer feedback

Overall, the project has run smoothly for our team and the customer has been pleased with the quality and timeliness of our work. The Commercial Manager at Foreman Homes described SC4 as a:
"Very friendly and professional outfit, always willing to help out and try and problem solve with us."
