Speciality trades can be structural (foundations, masonry and brickwork, timber structures and steel works), carpentry and roofing, mechanical and electrical services, finishing (painting and decorating, wallpapering, tiling, etc) as well as scaffolding, plant operations, landscaping, etc.

Diversity in Construction

Diversity in Construction

The Construction industry is suffering a major skills shortage and is missing out on the contribution of more than 50% of its potential workforce due to being predominantly and historically limited to straight (cishet) white men.

In the articles below we discuss How the Construction Industry can increase and support Diversity in its workforce and ensure Equity and Inclusion of all. There is a particular focus on Women in Construction and Neurodiversity in Construction, as well as sources of more information and support related to inclusion of a more diverse workforce.

In this context:

  • Equity aims to recognize and compensate for the various barriers that lead to specific groups of people being underrepresented. This is different from Equality which aims to treat everyone the same. This could include taking differences in background or education into account when interviewing, or setting up a mentoring programmes to support those from specific groups, such as women, minorities, LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent people.
  • Diversity ensures a range of different identities across traits like ethnicity, race, gender identity, language, socioeconomic status, and (dis)ability (among many other characteristics) are represented.
  • Inclusion It is not enough to have just equity and a diverse workforce. Construction needs to ensure that everyone feels appreciated, valued, welcomed and considered, and are given the opportunities to contribute, progress and excel.

    Neurodiversity in Construction Toolbox Talk

    Neurodiversity in Construction Toolbox Talk

    Katy Hall - 03-Oct-2025

This toolbox talk highlights that construction is an industry of brilliant problem-solvers, many of whom are neurodivergent (having conditions like ADHD, Dyslexia, or Autism). We know this because surveys suggest as many as 1 in 4 construction workers are neurodivergent, drawn to the sector's demands for 3D thinking, pattern recognition, and hyperfocus. These traits represent a "spiky profile" of exceptional strengths that drive innovation and quality on site. To leverage this cognitive strength, we must commit to simple, visible support—like providing noise-cancelling headphones, offering written instructions, or establishing a quiet break space—and encourage an open culture where everyone feels safe to ask, "What would make my job easier right now?" By doing so, we fulfill both our legal and moral obligations, making the site safer, smarter, and more productive.

Why is Neurodiversity so important in Construction?

Why is Neurodiversity so important in Construction?

    Katy Hall - 03-Oct-2025

The construction industry relies heavily on brilliant problem-solvers with unique skills like 3D visualization and pattern recognition, making it a natural fit for neurodivergent talent (including individuals with ADHD, Dyslexia, and Autism), whose prevalence in the sector is significantly higher than the general population. This neurodiverse advantage—the "spiky profile" of skills that provides exceptional aptitude in areas like hyperfocus and spatial awareness—is crucial for success, yet many of these workers struggle with invisible hurdles like sensory overload and difficulties with executive function. Therefore, construction companies have a both a commercial imperative and a legal and moral obligation under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments and foster a culture where simple support measures are implemented to leverage this powerful, detail-oriented workforce.
