Kickstart Your Construction Career With A Joinery And Carpentry Apprenticeship: Find Out More During National Apprenticeship Week
UK National Apprenticeship Week 2024, taking place between 5th and 11th of February, is a great time to explore what a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship involves and its practical aspects, and if this could be the right path for you into the construction industry.
The theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week is skills for life, focusing on the long-term benefits of an apprenticeship as the foundation of a lifelong learning path and rewarding career.
A carpentry apprenticeship with SC4 will give you all the basic carpentry training and on the job experience you need to operate safely and competently on a wide range of construction sites, and access to experienced mentorship to help you develop your carpentry skills and map out your future career.
Should I become a carpenter?
Carpentry and joinery is an extremely rewarding career within the construction sector, combining practical skills with creativity, and with a variety of projects and activities available to you. Average starting incomes for qualified carpenters are around £20K, and experienced carpenters and joiners can earn £50-£100K per year.
Carpenters carry out a variety of roles, all revolving around the installation and construction of wooden components, fittings, furnishings, and structural elements.
During your career you might spend time working on new residential and commercial developments, refurbishing and refitting existing buildings, restoring historical buildings, or working in a workshop prefabricating components.
You’ll have the opportunity to work on construction sites, homes, and commercial buildings, or in management roles across the country depending on where you choose to take your career. In the process you will learn to work safely at height, how to install floor joists, roof trusses, and wall partitions, how to create interior components such as staircases, how to put up structural frames for roads, bridges, buildings, and how to use a variety of manual and power tools. You will work with a wide range of people on shared projects and have the opportunity to make deep and lasting friendships, with opportunities for remote and more independent working, too.
You’ll also gain a deep understanding and appreciation of different types of wood, their properties, and how they can be used to create high-quality construction components.
