How is a Timber Frame Roof Installed?

Katy Hall - 25-Apr-2025

This video from SC4 Carpenters Ltd illustrates the installation of a timber frame roof. On this busy crane day in Winchester in April 2025, SC4 Carpenters installed two first floor walls and roofs and two ground floor walls and floor cassettes.

  1. The roof parts are delivered to site by lorry and lifted onto the first floor joists.
  2. Crane operations are planned by the Appointed Person (AP) and supervised on the day by the Crane Supervisor.
  3. The roof is built on the first floor cassettes for safety and to ensure the dimensions.
  4. Fall arrest bracing is fixed to the rafters.
  5. The completed roof is lifted off and stored on the ground.
  6. Slinger/Signallers ensure the roof is safely manouvered and signal to the crane driver to guide the lift.
  7. The ridge beam is added to the roof whilst it is on the ground.
  8. The first floor walls are installed.
  9. The roof is safely lifted onto the first floor walls with the assistance of the slinger/signallers.
  10. Once the roof has been lifted into place, the installers can move inside the inner scaffolding.
  11. The fall arrest bracing ensures the safety of roof installers and following trades.
  12. The alignment is checked and the roof is fixed into place.
